The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department partnering with Cumberland Neighborhood Watch, Inc. will be holding the Sheriff’s Youth Academy summer of 2015. This is a program that is designed to provide the youth in our communities the opportunity to gain insight into the everyday functions and training of the variety of law enforcement agencies and emergency services in our government. The youth academy is NOT a boot camp for troubled youth. It is a program offered to students who have an interest in law enforcement. Two different groups will be offered this year, 11-14 age group and 15-17 age group. The first academy will be held the week of July 13-17 for the age group of 11-14 years of age. The second academy will be held the week of July 20-24 for the age group of 15-17 years of age. We appreciate the Homestead Elementary School who will host these events. Breakfast and lunch will be provided each day. The curriculum includes Witness Statements, 911 Calls, Criminal Statistics, Traffic Enforcement, Patrol Procedures, Criminal Investigations, Crime Scene Processing, Narcotics, K-9 Units, Gangs, Personal Safety, Dealing with Bullying, Computer Safety - Sexting - Social Media, Juvenile Crime, and Overview of Criminal Justice System.. Participants who graduate the academy will have the opportunity to join the Sheriff’s Youth Cadet Program which will meet once a month, receive additional training and be involved in community functions with the Sheriff’s Department. Participants will also tour the Cumberland County Justice Center, Central Communications, and participate in a mock trial. If you are interested in attending please contact Gary Howard for more information and an applications at ghoward@ccsheriffs.org or call (931) 246-9882.
